Obsidian Sync pricing: $4 or $5 a month, and what it buys

Main topic: Obsidian Sync pricing · Facts checked 3 November 2026 — prices change, so re-check the official page before acting on them.

Last checked: 3 November 2026

Short answer: Obsidian Sync Standard is $4/month billed yearly — $48/year — or $5/month billed monthly, per person. Add one Publish site on yearly billing and the bundle is $144/year (that figure is arithmetic from the $4 Sync and $8 Publish monthly-on-yearly rates). One caution on limits: a single October 2026 read described Sync Standard as 1 vault, 1 GB storage and a 5 MB file limit — that is one read only, so confirm the current limits on the official page before relying on them. All prices as seen 2–3 November 2026; re-check on the official page on publish day.

The Sync price, worked out

Publish pricing, per site

Publish is priced per site: $8 per site per month billed yearly, $10 billed monthly. One site on yearly billing is $96/year; two sites are $192/year. Publish is separate from Sync — you can buy either without the other — and the $144/year figure people quote is simply Sync ($48) plus one Publish site ($96), both billed yearly. The limits — labelled honestly

One read only: a single October 2026 read of Sync’s terms described the Standard tier as 1 vault, 1 GB of storage, and a 5 MB maximum file size. Other reads differ and tiers change, so treat those three numbers as unconfirmed until you check the official Sync page yourself on publish day. The prices above are the multiply-confirmed part; the limits are not.

Free sync alternatives

Sync is a convenience, not a requirement — the same vault can move between devices for free:

  • iCloud — Apple-only setups; simplest free route.
  • Git (with the Obsidian Git plugin) — free version history; rougher on mobile.
  • Syncthing — private device-to-device sync on any platform; devices must both be on.
  • Dropbox (or another cloud folder) — keep the vault in the folder and set files to stay downloaded.

The rule above all: pick ONE sync method per vault — never run two at once, or you invite the conflicts and corruption Obsidian’s own guidance warns about. The routes are compared in full in how to sync Obsidian for free, and you can price your own setup in the true-cost calculator.

Questions people ask

How much is Obsidian Sync per year?

$48/year on yearly billing (at $4/month), or $60/year if you pay monthly at $5/month. Per person. Prices as seen 2–3 November 2026 — re-check the official page on publish day.

Is the $144/year figure real?

Yes, as arithmetic: Sync billed yearly ($48/year) plus one Publish site billed yearly ($96/year) totals $144/year, from the $4 and $8 monthly-on-yearly rates seen 2–3 November 2026. It is a bundle you assemble, not a separate plan — and Publish is per site, so a second site adds another $96/year on yearly billing.

Can I sync Obsidian without paying for Sync?

Yes — iCloud, Git, Syncthing or a Dropbox/cloud folder all move a vault between devices for free. The trade is your setup and care: pick ONE method per vault, test it on a copy, and keep a separate backup. The free sync guide walks through each route.
